The Sergio Tacchini Wilander track top is an OG mid 80s sportswear style as famously worn by the Swedish tennis legend, Mats Wilander.
Half a decade may have passed since the fiery American, John McEnroe, had burst onto the scene with his Ghibli track top and Nike Wimbledon's but one thing was for sure, Sergio Tacchini still remained the king of the court in 1985. As McEnroe's dominance started to fade away it was the next generation of tennis talent like Matts Wilander that would fly the Tacchini flag moving into the mid 80s. The Grand Slam titles of the 1980s had become like a "Casual" catwalk of style driven sportswear where legendary Italian designers like Sergio Tacchini would flaunt their very latest wares to a global TV audience. The French Open in 1985 was no different. It was Ivan Lendl & Mats Wilander in the final. Lendl wore his signature adidas Argyle polo shirt, whilst Matts Wilander wore the latest style driven designs from Tacchini. Wilander beat Lendl which would mark his 4th Grand Slam title. As he lifted the prestigious Roland-Garros trophy, it wasn't just the silverware people were watching it was also his signature Wilander polo shirt from the Italian sportswear label, Sergio Tacchini. As sportswear designs started to become even more style driven moving into the mid 80s, it was OG designs like the Wilander that were a testament to Tacchini's new direction of sportswear design. A new generation of tennis talent like Mats Wilander & Pete Sampras catapulted Tacchini into the late 1980s & early 90s with some of the most vibrant designs the tennis world had ever seen. Mats Wilander was a Swedish tennis player & former World No.1 that was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2002. Winning the French Open & Australian Open both 3 times between 1982 & 1988 as well as the US Open in 1988, Wilander was one of the youngest ever players to win 4 Grand Slam titles by the age of 20.
