This latest Sergio Tacchini Star track top in navy is probably just about as good as it gets when it comes to classic McEnroe styles from the 1980s.
From the late 1970s to the mid 1980s
John McEnroe was the original pin-up boy for the legendary Italian sportswear brand, Sergio Tacchini. Following a brief spell with Fila in his earlier career, McEnroe also joined the ranks of Nike in 1985 as the swoosh brand looked to muscle in on the top seeded players with multi-million dollar contracts. This magical period in McEnroe's highly profile career marked a new chapter in sportswear endorsements. Between 1980 & 1985 McEnroe was ranked World No.1 on 14 separate occasions, finishing the year ranked No.1 for 4 consecutive years from 81-84. In the same period he won Wimbledon 3 times, the US Open 4 times, the Masters 3 times and the WCT Finals 5 times. Sergio Tacchini couldn't have really played the endorsement card much better but the thing was it also had a lot to do with the style driven sportswear they were kitting McEnroe out in. This magical McEnroe era is now brought back to life once again with the release of the Sergio Tacchini Star track top with now arrives back at its spiritual home in a classic navy colourway.

The combination of Italian sportswear & McEnroe's bad boy persona put the unique sportswear endorsement in a league of its own. Apart from maybe Fila with Borg, Agassi with Nike, Lendl with adidas or Ellesse with Vilas, nothing has really come close in the world of tennis since. From the early 80s onwards McEnroe won pretty much everything and each time he lifted a trophy he was wearing Tacchini. The US tennis legend became associated with numerous OG track top styles throughout this magical era of Italian sportswear such as the Ghibli, the Masters, the Dallas & the Star to name a few. It was the Sergio Tacchini Star track top that McEnroe wore as he beat Ivan Lendl in the semi-finals of Wimbledon in 1983. In the final against New Zealand's Chris Lewis, McEnroe also wore the signature Sergio style, with Lewis kitted out head to toe in Ellesse and McEnroe in Tacchini. It was classic 80s sportswear at its very best.
