For the Casuals it was only the finest Scottish knitwear from the likes of Lyle & Scott. Argyle patterns, premium fabrics, V-neck designs & vibrant colourways you would normally associate with the golf course were the all the traits the Casuals looked in for in their knitwear. Lyle & Scott ticked all these boxes. It was a premium golf brand that could be found in traditional sports shops alongside the tennis aisle or trainer wall. It also looked pretty "casual" but more importantly it had a premium price tag. It's no wonder really the Casuals & the Dressers of the late 70s & early 80s decided to adopt the brand as their own. The vibrant colourways of the knitwear & hefty price tag had an instant appeal for those looking to outdo their fellow Casuals. Some bargain bin tatt from C&A wouldn't really cut it, it was all about crocodiles, laurel wreaths & golden eagles. Iconic logos like Lyle & Scott's golden eagle were like badges of honour for the young Casual. If you could afford the clobber it was a sign you had a bit of coin & you weren't messing about in the wardrobe department. Working class kids would do anything they could to get their hands on the latest wares from the Scottish knitwear brand from five finger discounts to blagging their parents to shell out a weeks wages. What was once a brand for retired golf club members was now at the very forefront of the Casual subculture. Over the last 40 years the Casual brand has been worn by a variety of artists from early Grime artists like the Mitchell Brothers, Indie bands like the Arctic Monkeys as well as football legends such as Christian Ronaldo.
