If you're into the more "Casual" side of clothes you've probably owned a fair bit of the classic Aquascutum check in your time.
From the original Mac wearers of the 1980s to the designer brand revival of the mid noughties, the tribal check of the London born label is an all time fan favourite. The classic club check has been a constant occurrence on the crowded terraces for the last 40 years with Aquascutum headwear & accessories just as sought after today. Nick Love's 'The Football Factory' from 2004 brought a touch of Aqua to the big screen in various scenes and we're not talking about the 90s Danish-Norwegian Europop band. Aquascutum check to the Casuals is something like the equivalent of tartan to Punk, gingham to Two Tone or flannel to Grunge. Subcultures come in all shapes and sizes with different patterns and prints of association. When it comes to the Casual Subculture it will always be the classic club check from Aquascutum. Founded way back in 1851 by John Emary on London's prestigious Regent Street, it was Aquascutum that introduced the first waterproof wool fabric for outerwear. Aquascutum might sound like some sort of fancy Victorian name but it's actually the Latin for 'watershield'. Long before the days of GORE-TEX & garment technology from the 1980s from the likes of Massimo Osti, Aquascutum were already setting the bar for fabric innovation 130 years earlier. It's the British connection of the brand that has made the designer label what is it today as previously worn by the likes of Sean Connery, Winston Churchill & Michael Caine. Even Maggie Thatcher was partial to a bit of the classic check when she went on a state visit to Russia back in the 1980s. Prime ministers & Play Dirty actors aside, it was the Casual connection of the 1980s that really gave Aquascutum the subcultural status it still holds today. When it comes to the accessories of choice for the Casuals it will always be check scarves & check caps from the British designer brand that will always come on top.
