The Aquascutum Club Check shirt is probably just about "casual" as it gets when it comes to classic shirting & now arrives back at its spiritual home.
In 50 years time we'll still probably be talking about the importance of the Aquascutum Club Check shirt on Britain's homegrown subcultures. The elitist appeal of classic British brands like Aquascutum & Burberry sky rocketed in the 1980s as the FTSE 100 started an upwards trend and the whole "city boy" look of London went "casual" courtesy of
Borg Elites & Lois jeans. It was the money look Mac of these brands that put the classic check into the Casual culture circle as one-upmanship reigned supreme and young Casuals kitted themselves out head to toe in classic check. As the brands went full circle moving into the 90s with the revival of Casual sportswear, a new Britpop style was born courtesy of bands like Oasis & Ocean Colour Scene with their full check shirts, jeans and adidas trainers on feet. As Casual fashion moved into the early noughties the 90s style remained with long sleeve "casual" shirts from brands like Aquascutum a key look among the pubs, the clubs & the football terraces. Styles like the Aquascutum Club shirt are probably just about as "casual" as it gets when it comes to classic shirting.

Founded back in 1851 by John Emary on London's prestigious Regent Street, it was Aquascutum that introduced the first waterproof wool fabric for outerwear. Aquascutum might sound like some sort of fancy Victorian name but it's actually the Latin for 'watershield'. Long before the days of GORE-TEX & garment technology from the 1980s from the likes of Massimo Osti, Aquascutum were already setting the bar for fabric innovation 130 years earlier. There's probably only really a handful of brands that can claim the same cult status as Aquascutum. After a brief hiatus on what we thought was the end of the highly celebrated heritage brand the classic check now returns back to its spiritual home for 2024.
