Diadora Borg Elite: It Was All About Representing The Elite
The Diadora Borg Elite trainer now returns to 80s Casual Classics, a classic 80s tennis style that became an underground status symbol among the original Casuals.
Berlin based fashion magazine, Highsnobiety, throw a spotlight on UK Casual Culture in collaboration with the legendary Italian sportswear brand, Diadora, in this short video below. Featuring a range of people who were involved in the original Casual scene such as Cass Pennant and our very own founder, Neil Primett, the short video explores how Diadora in particular had such a lasting impression on terrace fashion from a Casual perspective. The elitist appeal & hefty price tag of classic 80s tennis styles like the Diadora Borg Elite became the must have trainer for young working class Casuals. As new trainer trends come and go, the Borg Elite still holds the same elitist appeal it held back in the 1980s. A timeless ‘Made in Italy’ tennis style which now returns to its spiritual home.

Before the Casuals took in the Borg Elite trainer as their very own, the Elite had already earned its stripes with the tennis elite. The 1970s saw the competition to create the greatest tennis shoe really heat up following on from the success of the Stan Smith from adidas. Sportswear brands’ went head to head to create the comfiest court shoe. It was all about performance, comfort, breathability, traction & speed. Diadora went all in with the introduction of the Elite trainer in 1976. It was the Elite that gave Diadora the cult Casual status it still holds today.

As worn by a range of tennis elite such as Guillermo Vilas, the Elite was a instant hit. When the Borg Elite landed in 1981, the timing couldn’t have been better. A signature shoe for the Swedish champion which featured breathable uppers, a unique carbon injected sole & a self adjusting speed lacing system. A combination of casual panache & premium materials, the Borg Elite was one of the most expensive trainers available on the market at the time. The fact that it was also kitted out in gold only added to the desirability even more. The Borg Elite trainer was a complete game changer.
