The PUMA Star is a classic tennis trainer from the early 1980s & is now revived in all its OG glory.
When it comes to the original Casual stuff from the golden era of wedge haircuts, trainers & one-upmanship it's pretty much guaranteed to have some sort of sporting connection. The Casuals championed sportswear like no other subculture before, the rarer and more expensive the better, and it didn't really matter if the gear was worn for golf, handball, football, track athletes or tennis. Tennis trainers played a massive part in Casual fashion from
the original Stan Smith to the Borg Elite, there is no denying that tennis gave us some of the best trainers of the 1970s & 1980s. Sportswear brands like PUMA were just as big on the elite tennis scene as they were on the running tracks & the inner city basketball courts. Pioneering a range of innovative trainer designs that could be used on various court surfaces PUMA gave us the likes of the GV Special, the Court, the GV Hard Court, the Wimbledon & the Becker to name a few throughout the 1970s & 1980s. Another OG court silhouette from this magical era of tennis toggery was the PUMA Star trainer which now arrives back at its spiritual home.

Following the death of Rudolph Dassler in 1974 and Adi Dassler shortly after in 1978, the competition between adidas & PUMA still remained just as strong moving into the late 1970s & early 80s. The bitter brotherly feud had sparked a 'one-up' approach to footwear production. Family ties may have been cut in the process but from a performance product point of view the dispute actually gave us some of the greatest trainers of all time. It was all about who could create the very best performance shoe, a 'one up' mentality which would ironically become the mindset of the Casuals. As the Casuals looked to the continent to source some of the rarest silhouettes, it was footwear brands like PUMA that really captured that 'one up' mentality.

First released in the early 1980s, the PUMA Star trainer was an original Made in West Germany silhouette and worn by the top tennis players of the era. Featuring the iconic perforated formstrip which added extra breathability for its wearer, PUMA released various versions of the Star throughout the 1980s which included the Court Star & the Pro Star, the latter was originally made in Taiwan.

Featuring crisp white leather uppers with suede overlays & pops of archive green to the heel, outsole & ankle collar, the Star couldn't scream classic 80s tennis more if it really tried. Finished off with terry towelling to the inner and PUMA Star branding to the sidewalls and midsole, this revival release is sure to go down a treat with the serious PUMA heads out there.
