PUMA Super Team Claret

PUMA Give The Super Team The Claret & Blue Treatment

If you're bang into your classic PUMA & you're an avid fan of West Ham, Villa or Burnley, then you'll absolutely love this latest Super Team trainer in claret & blue.

There's probably not many other sportswear brands out there that have fuelled such a fierce rivalry as adidas & PUMA. The fact is no two other sportswear brands were started out of a bitterly brotherly rivalry like that of the Dassler brothers. Following the death of Rudolph Dassler in 1974 and Adi Dassler shortly after in 1978, the competition between adidas & PUMA still remained just as strong moving into the 1980s with a 'one-up' approach to footwear innovation whether it was on the tracks, the football pitches or the speedy courts of the Handball-Bundesliga. The goal was simple, get the best athletes to wear your trainers, and when it came specifically to handball, PUMA did a pretty good job of it. Teaming up with handball legends like Vlado Stenzel in the 1970s put the big cat logo brand at the highest level of the elite handball courts. Moving into the early 1980s it was the PUMA Super Team trainer that marked the next generation of speedy court shoes. The OG handball silhouette now arrives in a deep claret & sky colourway, an absolute must for the West Ham, Villa or Burnley fans.

First introduced in 1982, the Super Team trainer was originally worn by the German National Handball team for the World Cup which was hosted in West Germany. As oppose to the traditional full suede styles of previous PUMA court shoes, the Super Team featured mesh uppers with suede overlays for added breathability. Unlike football, handball required a slightly different approach as far as the trainers were concerned. Handball is generally played indoors on the classic 'sports centre' style hard floors. A performance shoe made solely for handball was all about traction and speed. PUMA also gave us the Vlado Stenzel in 1978 which was closely followed by the Handball SPEZIAL in 1979 from adidas. PUMA also released the 'Handball' trainer around the same.

The European exclusivity of the Super Team trainer made it an instant with the original Casuals, becoming just as popular on the speedy handball courts of Europe as the rain soaked terraces of the UK. After a recent revival a few years back the classic gum sole court silhouette is now treated to a deep claret/sky colourway update for 2025. Featuring suede uppers with the signature t-toe construction to the front, other highlights include Super Team branding in gold foiling to the sidewalls & PUMA's famous formstripe in a contrasting sky blue. Finished off with a rubber gum sole for that all important retro kerb appeal, the Super Team trainer is now available from 80s Casual Classics via the links above.
