The Lyle & Scott polo shirt now returns to its spiritual home in a massive selection of colourways with updated hues such as toffee & pastel green.
When William Lyle & Walter Scott started a knitwear brand back in 1874 in the Scottish town of Hawick did they ever think that the golden eagle would become one of the biggest Casual brands to come out of the United Kingdom? Probably not. Apart from maybe Fred Perry which was more of a Perry Boy thing in Manchester & Salford, Lyle & Scott was arguably the biggest homegrown designer brand worn by the original Dressers of the late 1970s & early 1980s. What was traditionally targeted at elite golfers & country club members became associated with wedge haircuts & working class subculture. As with the majority of brands worn by the Casuals they were continental, but with Lyle & Scott is was closer to home thanks to Saturday afternoons browsing local sports shops & the elitist appeal. The Lyle & Scott polo shirt became the top everyone wanted. Whether it was on a V-neck or a 3 button placket polo, as long as the golden eagle was on show it didn't matter. A far cry from the elitist golf clubs, where memberships came with secret handshakes and year long waiting lists. The closest thing the average Casual lad had come to a golf course was probably playing crazy golf on holiday as a kid. Golf wasn't exactly a sport you associated with tear ups on the terraces but neither was tennis. It was all about sportswear, which unlike nowadays, was traditionally sold in sports shops. The old school style sportswear stores with walls of tennis rackets, snooker cues, dartboards and trophies. It was these stores that gave birth to trends like Argyle knitwear & V-necks courtesy of homegrown knitwear brands like Lyle & Scott. One of the original Casual brands, Lyle & Scott was all about the hefty price tags, the quality knits & the bold colours. It was all about one-upmanship and what better way to flaunt it than a brand usually worn by the money rich & the country club members. Since the revival of the golden eagle back in the late noughties, the Scottish heritage brand saw a huge resurgence thanks to celebrity endorsement from the likes of The Arctic Monkey's, Kasabian & Pete Doherty to name a few. Taking cues from the original Casual styles from the golden era of eagles, the Scottish knitwear brand has grown into an all singing & all dancing contemporary heritage label.
