Each of the big sportswear brands holds the honours to a handful of unquestionable icons. For adidas it's probably something like the Gazelle, the Stan Smith or the Samba. Diadora it's got to be the Borg Elite and for PUMA there is no denying it's the Suede. It's simply PUMA's trademark style from an era of B-Boys & electro beats straight out of the Bronx. Even though Hip Hop might have officially turned 50 last year, there's no trade in for cosy slippers and dressing gowns when it comes to the Suede. It's street appeal is just as big today as it was back in the days of rolled up lino and full Tachini track suits. It's crazy to think the the Suede is now actually 56 years, an icon of the trainer world that has stood the test of time literally like nothing else. Who would of thought a simple suede silhouette from a sportswear brand based out of Bavaria could of become the subcultural icon it is day. The history of the PUMA Suede goes back to 1968 when the Crack (as the Suede was previously known) was launched for the Mexico Olympics in 1968. The same year that Adi Dassler released the adidas Gazelle & the adidas Perfekt, Rudolph looked to 'one up' his brother in typical Dassler brother style with the introduction of the Suede. At the height of the Civil Rights movement in the USA, two American African athletes Tommie Smith & John Carlos raised their fists whilst holding their PUMA trainers on the winners podium. Moving into 1972 the Crack then became the Clyde courtesy of the New York Knicks legend, Walt 'Clyde' Frazier. Thanks to the basketball & street connection, the Suede became the go-to choice of the original B-Boys of the early 1980s.
