Before the Casuals first came on the scene in the late 1970s golfing gear wasn't exactly something you would have associated with the terraces and tear-ups. It was more Dr. Martens and donkey jackets prior to the invasion of Casual sportswear from across the continent. The Casuals were all about dressing smart. Gone were the days of looking like you'd just been working on the bins, for the Casuals it was more than just getting pissed and pitch invasions. It was all about one-upmanship, wearing the right gear and with that came expensive price tags and style driven Italian sportswear. Just like the punks had their tartan for the Casuals it was the argyle diamond pattern. The Casuals embraced sportswear as their own whether it was for golf, tennis, handball, football or track athletes. In the case of argyle it was strictly golf, previously worn by the likes of Jack Nicklaus and the golfing elite. Started back in 1973 by Jack Sofier and Alex Pyser after a visit to the Italian town of Gabicce Mare, located in the picturesque Province of Pesaro and Urbino, Gabicci is a heritage brand rich in British subculture. The iconic G logo captured the hearts of the soul movement of the 1970s with Northern Soul in the North of England and the Soul Boys in the South. World renowned Soul DJ's like Norman Jay pioneered the original Gabicci Soul Boy look with Gabicci knitwear and polo shirts. Merging the lines somewhere between soul & the smarter dressers, the Gabicci Vintage line revived the original styles worn by the Soul Boys & the original Casuals.

Just like a lot of the original Casual stuff, it's not always that simple to pinpoint where the argyle trend actually came from. As Casuals had a fascination with sports stores, and we're talking traditional sports stores here that sold tennis rackets and golf clubs, it was more than likely from a passing visit to one. There was also the Scottish knitwear connection with the likes of Aberdeen & Dundee who were playing in big European Cup games throughout the 1970s & 1980s. You also can't forget Ivan Lendl's signature adidas Argyle polo shirt he wore during the early 80s.
