Everything You Need To Know About The PUMA Sprint Trainer

The PUMA Sprint trainer is an early noughties icon that drew inspiration from an original low profile cycling silhouette from the German sportswear brand.
Taking design inspiration from 1970s cycling trainers such as the Olympia Sprint trainer, the PUMA Sprint is a slim profile 'Big Cat' silhouette that followed in the footsteps of the success of the Speed Cat in the early noughties. The Olympia Sprint was an original all leather 'Made in Yugoslavia' cycling trainer from 1976 that featured a pedal cleat sole and marked a new era for PUMA's dominance in road cycling. First released in 2002, the PUMA Sprint was the pinnacle of trainer culture here in the UK. A hugely popular silhouette of the era, the Sprint trainer took the signature perforated toe box of the Olympia Sprint with an updated slim line running silhouette. Worn by everyone from bassline loving boy racers to beanie wearing indie boys, the PUMA Sprint perfectly captured the trends of the new Millennium.

A popular silhouette on the local 'cruise' scene, the Sprint was usually teamed up with slightly bootcut jeans, Stussy beanie hats & Stone Island knitwear. Those who had a penchant for coil overs & paint can exhausts, that probably spent too much time hanging around their local Matalan car park on a cold Wednesday evening. will remember just how big the slim line PUMA silhouettes were. The chances are you probably saw someone wearing the PUMA Sprint trainer as the basslines from Bowlers, or Sidewinder if you were down South, bounced around the various subwoofers on show. The whiff of petrol, PUMA trainers & souped up Peugeots were a common sight around the UK in the early noughties as the 'Max Power' subculture took over the local car parks.
