PUMA Indoor trainer 80s

Everything You Need To Know About The PUMA Indoor Trainer

The PUMA Indoor trainer was first released in the mid 1980s as a universal training shoe for a variety of sports and is now revived from the German sportswear brand's archive.

If there's one thing the German sportwear brand PUMA knows a thing or two about it's classic gum soled shoes. Pioneering some of the most talked about silhouettes of the last 70 years from the original Suede to the Super Team, PUMA's legacy of the classic gum soled styles is in a league of its own. Following in the footsteps of the likes of the Palermo, the Indoor trainer as the name would suggest, was first released in the mid 1980s as an indoor training shoe for various sports. Similar in appearance to the original Germany Army trainer with leather uppers & suede overlays, the Indoor trainer featured ventilation holes to the toe vamp and sidewalls for added breathability, a signature feature of 80s trainers as also seen on the Borg Elite from Diadora. Now revived from the PUMA archives for 2025, the Indoor trainer is treated to a very special re-release.

Following the death of Rudolph Dassler in 1974 and Adi Dassler shortly after in 1978, the competition between adidas & PUMA still remained just as strong moving into the 1980s. The bitter brotherly feud had sparked a 'one-up' approach to footwear production. Family ties may have been cut in the process but from a performance product point of view the dispute actually gave us some of the greatest trainers of all time. Whether it was on the tracks, the football pitches or the speedy courts of the Handball-Bundesliga, it didn't really matter. It was all about who could create the very best performance shoe, a 'one up' mentality which would ironically become the mindset of the Casuals as they looked to out-do each other whether it was a Sergio track top from an away trip to Turin or some super rare trainers.
