The Diadora Tokyo trainer is an OG indoor training shoe from the early 1980s and takes its name from the Japanese metropolis.
For many, Diadora will always bring back nostalgia from the 1980s & 90s whether its pin up boys like Bjorn Borg wearing his signature shoes in the early 1980s or Roberto Baggio aka The Divine Ponytail attacking the ball in his iconic neon yellow boots at Italia 90. It was back in 1948 that Marcello Daniele introduced his first hiking boots for Diadora. The 1970s and 1980s saw Diadora take on the tennis world with endorsements from tennis legends such as Guillermo Vilas, Martin Mulligan and Bj_rn Borg. It was this tennis connection that really put Diadora on the sportswear map with the likes of the Borg Elite in the early 1980s with its state of the art trainer tech and 'ice man' endorsement. For Diadora it didn't just stop at tennis though. Gum soled indoor training shoes had also become huge in the 1970s thanks to other classics like the Suede from PUMA and the Gazelle from adidas. Diadora also tapped into the gum-soled trend with OG silhouettes like the Aberdeen & the Tokyo in the 1980s, also taking inspiration from towns & cities for the names of the silhouettes. First released in 1982 the Tokyo was geared up for indoor training with design inspiration from the classic gum soled silhouettes of the era.
