Aquascutum Club Check: The Return of a Casual Icon
Quintessentially British, Aquascutum's Club Check is something like the equivalent of a tribal check for the terraces worn by the original 80s Casuals.
If you've ever walked into a boozer on matchday with the Jukie playing The Jam and more Club Check congregated together than you've ever seen you'll know exactly what we're talking about. There's just nothing quite like the buzz of matchday in a boozer and when all the best gear comes out there's always a bit of Aquascutum on show. Even before its more recent revival the British designer label was still held in high regard. The thing is regardless of what was happening with the brand the Casual scene will always have a strong affinity to the classic Club Check. From the original Mac wearers of the 1980s to the designer brand revival of the mid noughties, the tribal check of the London born label is an all time fan favourite. The good news is Aquascutum Club Check is now officially back with one of its biggest collections to date.

Founded back in 1851 by John Emary on London's prestigious Regent Street, it was Aquascutum that introduced the first waterproof wool fabric for outerwear. Aquascutum might sound like some sort of fancy Victorian name but it's actually the Latin for 'watershield'. Long before the days of GORE-TEX & garment technology from the 1980s from the likes of Massimo Osti, Aquascutum were already setting the bar for fabric innovation 130 years earlier. There's probably only really a handful of brands that can claim the same cult status as Aquascutum and just like the fellow British brand Burberry had their iconic 'Nova' check, for Aquascutum it was all about the Club check.

It's the British connection of the brand that has made the designer label what is it today, as previously worn by the likes of Sean Connery, Winston Churchill & Michael Caine. Even Maggie Thatcher was partial to a bit of the classic Club Check when she went on a state visit to Russia back in the 1980s. It was the Casual connection however of the 1980s that really gave Aquascutum the subcultural status it still holds today. After a brief hiatus on what we thought was the end of the highly celebrated heritage brand the classic Club Check now returns to its spiritual home.
