Like the majority of classic 3 stripes from the past there have been numerous releases of one style. Just like a VW Golf has various variations it's no different when it comes to archive adidas trainers. Take the Gazelle for example. To the trainer novice they might all look the same apart from the colourways. But as any die hard adidas fan will tell you it's all in the details. Whether its a slightly slimmer profile, the T-toe and the tooling or even the country of manufacture, which means a lot more than what you probably might think. First released back in 1968, the adidas Gazelle was one of the very first adidas trainers to feature suede uppers as oppose to leather. Ironically the PUMA Suede, or Crack as it was originally known, was also released the same year. It was typical Dassler brother rivalry. Worn by the West Germany national football team as an all purpose training shoe, the Gazelle became a popular style for its revolutionary lightweight feel as oppose to traditional leather training shoes which were heavier on foot. The Gazelle also marked the start of adidas trainers with references to animals in their names alongside other notable silhouettes such as the Jaguar and the Panther.

Looking back at the last 55 years it was the various subcultures that gave the adidas Gazelle the icon status it holds today. The Gazelle became a popular footwear choice on the terraces with the original Casuals throughout the 1980s alongside the original B-Boys and their break dancing crews for its all round comfort and style. Moving forward to the early 90s, the Gazelle saw the release of the 1991 edition, a shoe that came available in more colourways than ever before giving a nod to the colourful 90s era. As seen on the Gallagher brothers & Kate Moss, the style became synonymous to the whole Britpop era and Cool Britannia.
