Umbro Drill Top Liam Gallagher

Go “Mad Fer It” With Umbro’s Classic Drill Collection

The Umbro Classic Drill Collection revives a range of 90s training tops as worn by the Oasis frontman himself at the legendary Maine Road gig back in 1996.

It’s mad how one person can literally change a sportswear brand overnight. Liam Gallagher certainly did that with Umbro back in April 1996. Traditionally, Umbro was a sportswear brand you wore to train in at your local football club, whether it was on a pair of football shorts or a pair of football boots. It wasn’t really a brand associated with loud mouthed Mancunians that wore Stone Island jackets and sniffed anything you put in front of them. The moment Liam Gallagher took to the stage wearing that iconic Umbro Drill Top, the world was watching, literally. After the gig everyone wanted that top.

When speaking with NME in 2017 Kasabian’s Serge Pizzorno said; “I was 14, 15, and I remember when they did Maine Road he wore an Umbro tracksuit. An Umbro tracksuit on anyone is a sports tracksuit, but he managed to make it look like the most desirable item of clothing. He managed to make it look like Gucci or something, and I bought one and wore it to school.” A testament to Gallagher’s influence on the Manchester based sportswear brand.

The funny thing is it that it was by complete chance that Liam just happened to wear that specific top from Umbro that night. It wasn’t product placement like we know today, he wasn’t paid to wear it in return for X amount of views on social media. He simply found it lying around in the changing rooms as City were sponsored by Umbro at the time. Liam recalls the moment; “I went backstage there was some player’s fucking Umbro gear just sitting there and I thought, ‘I’m having a bit of that’, tried it on, fucking freebie innit and, and I fucking pinched it and fucking wore it”.

The football connection of Man City to Oasis was also massive at the time. The band were even pictured wearing City kits on the Maine Road tickets, minus Bonehead of course who refused to be on them as he is actually a Man United fan. To play at a football club the Gallagher brothers had supported all their lives was a big deal and their fans knew it. Liam would later claim that even Knebworth didn’t come close to the Maine Road gig.
