This Town is a forthcoming BBC series written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight about Coventry's homegrown Two-tone music scene in the late 1970s & early 1980s.
You've probably heard the old chestnut "music was better in my day" from various generations whether they were into Led Zeppellin or late 80s Acid House. The thing is though for the Two-Tone heads they're probably right. If you can name a genre (currently trending) that beats the classic stuff from the likes of The Specials or Madness then we're all ears. Not only did Two-tone revive the original ska & reggae sounds of the 1960s it created a whole new genre merging traits of punk & new wave with a phet-fuelled scene of saxophones, sharp suits & pork pie hats. Taking its name from 2 Tone Records which was started by Jerry Dammers of The Specials in 1979 the scene started in Coventry in the West Midlands with a desire to unite blacks, whites & Asians in Thatcher's divided Britain. The Two tone scene is now brought to life courtesy of Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight with 'This Town', a forthcoming BBC series about Coventry's celebrated music scene. After working on wardrobe with Nick Love on 'The Firm' (2009) and more recently 'A Town Called Malice' (2023) we've also previously worked with Shane Meadows for 'This is England 86' (2010) as well as Chris Green's 'The Pebble & The Boy' (2020). Our latest project sees us supplying a mix of wardrobe on the forthcoming BBC series 'This Town' so expect plenty of Gabicci & classic early 80s mod revival style. Set in 1981 around Coventry and the West Midlands, the celebrated Two-tone scene spawned no.1 hits and worldwide recognition. Written by Peaky Blinders creator, Steven Knight, the six part series tells the story of a band's formation in a world of violence, division, teenage kicks and the Two-tone subculture. Starring Michelle Dockery, (Downton Abbey, Anatomy of a Scandal), Nicholas Pinnock (Life, Marcella ) & David Dawson (My Policeman, The Last Kingdom).
This is a project very close to my heart. It's about an era I lived through and know well, and it involves characters who I feel I grew up with. It's a love letter to Birmingham and Coventry, but I hope people from all over the world will relate to it. Steven Knight (creator)
