The Reebok Exo Fit Trainer Arrives in Hi Top Version

The Reebok Ex-O-Fit Hi trainer was first introduced in 1983 at the pinnacle of Reebok's fitness takeover of the 1980s.
The 1980s marked a whole new chapter for the Bolton born sportswear brand. As adidas & Nike were trying to "one-up" each on the tracks with the latest innovations in sole technology, Reebok saw a huge gap in the market. Ironically, as more people started to wear sportswear for "casual" wear, more people wanted to get in shape. The fitness boom of the 1980s was absolutely huge with lycra clad gym goers looking for a multi-purpose training shoe that could be used in the aerobic studios, on the treadmills, in the weights room and even for the walk home. Reebok gave them the answer. 1982 saw the launch of the Reebok Freestyle trainer which was closely followed by the Reebok Ex-O-Fit trainer a year later. The Freestyle was Reebok's very first fitness shoe which was specifically designed for women and aerobic exercise. Thanks to Jane Fonda, Flash Dance & various fitness videos, the early 1980s saw a cultural change in getting fit. Now you could even work out in the comfort of your own living room without stepping foot in the gym thanks to the introduction of VHS videos. Home workouts still needed a proper trainer though and Reebok took full advantage of it. The Reebok Ex-O-Fit is a testament to Reebok's fitness heritage which now arrives in the classic Hi Top version. Above: The Reebok Ex-O-Fit Hi trainer in white now available from 80s Casual Classics. Even though the Freestyle was a huge success the only problem was that it was mainly marketed at women. Reebok needed a male equivalent to also cash in on the rise of the male gym goer courtesy of all action movie stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger & Sly Stallone with their testosterone enhanced physiques. Selling a certain pumped up physique without the advantage of steroids might have been a complete lie, but there was no deception about Reebok's fitness range. In 1983 the brand introduced the Reebok Ex-O-Fit trainer as a new male equivalent of the Freestyle. Originally available in Lo & Hi Top versions, the Ex-O-Fit couldn't scream 80s fitness shoe more if it tried. With an almost identical appearance to the Freestyle, the original Ex-O-Fit trainer featured a single Velcro strap, white leather uppers & terry towelling to the inner ankle support.
