The Reebok Classic Gets The Gum Sole Treatment

It doesn't really get much more classic as far as trainers are concerned than the original Reebok Classic from 1983 which now arrives in an updated gum sole version.

We could talk about classic trainers all day, we probably already do, but can you really blame us when it comes to all time classics like the Reebok Classic? Whether its reminiscing of the casual sportswear worn by England fans at France 98 or the original fitness fanatics of the early 80s there is no denying the cult status of the original Classic silhouette from the Bolton born sportswear brand. The signature Union Jack logo became like a badge of honour for those looking to build better bodies courtesy of Reebok's clever marketing and spotting a gap in the fitness/gym world. Where other brands were looking to one-up each other with the latest sole technology on the running tracks, Reebok kept things simple with a range of 'All Leather' styles that would go down in trainer history. OG silhouettes like the Reebok Classic championed the 80s fitness craze, an all purpose training shoe that was as comfy as they come. The Classic 80s trainer now gets the gum sole treatment for the ultimate in retro kerb appeal. Reebok's vision was to create a fitness shoes that could be used for various workouts from weight training to aerobics. The Classic leather styles of the early to mid 1980s have become some of the most celebrated Reebok silhouettes of all time from the original Freestyle trainer in 1982, the Newport Classic in 1982, the Workout in 1984 & the Club C from 1985. It's the Reebok Classic Leather from 1983 that is probably the most recognisable though. Synonymous with the UK's homegrown street culture, the Classic couldn't scream "UK" more if it tried. As far as subculture is concerned the Classic's connection to the Casual scene would probably look something like a pair of combat shorts, a short sleeve Hackett shirt and a Lacoste bucket hat courtesy of the football fans at France 98. Then there's the whole early noughties Garage connection as Mike Skinner (The Streets) famously said "Let's put on our Classics and have a little dance shall we". The Reebok Classic ticked all the boxes for the avid gym goer & aesthetically looked like nothing before it. The unisex 'all leather' silhouette was great for just about any gym activity. Reebok's marketing team also did a pretty job of describing the Classic Leather with the tagline; 'It's Luxurious, it's rich, it's soft, Reebok garment leather that feels like you're walking on clouds'. If you have ever owned a pair of Classic's you'd probably say something similar about the early 80s trainer.
