The PUMA Roma Gets The 'Bluebird' Treatment

The PUMA Roma trainer is now introduced to 80s Casual Classic in an updated 'Bluebird' inspired colourway for the latest season.

The PUMA Roma trainer is a great example of just how competitive the Dassler brothers really were. adidas first released the Rom & then PUMA released the Roma. Although official release dates of the trainers might have varied nearly 10 years the idea was anything you can do it, I can do it better. The Roma first came on the scene at the height of the Dassler brothers bitterly rivalry. Fuelled by one-upmanship and getting the very best athletes to endorse your shoes, the PUMA Roma was first introduced in the the late 1960s in celebration of the UEFA Euro Championship in Italy. A popular style among the trainer afiocondas of the 1970s, the Casual elite of the 1980s and the big jacket wearing Britpoppers of the mid 1990s. After a more recent revival the PUMA Roma trainer now arrives in an updated 'Bluebird' inspired colourway. Originally released back in 1968 to coincide with the prestigious Euros football tournament, of which Italy also won, the Roma was a training shoe specifically designed for the track. The running heritage of PUMA had already seen the German athlete, Armin Harry, cross the finish line wearing a pair of PUMA's at the Rome Olympics in 1960 as competition between the Dassler brothers took place on the global athletics stage. The Roma was initially introduced as a training shoe for athletes but it was its sporty looks that saw it become a go to style of the Casuals in the 1980s. As punk merged into "new wave" and expensive track tops took over the local youth clubs of the UK, the Roma's 1980s re-release saw the trainer find a new home among those with a penchant for rare trainers & European sportswear swagger. Another iconic PUMA suede style, the Bluebird was first released in 1982 and featured the signature blue & yellow contrasting colourway. This latest revival release ditches the traditional leather uppers of the Roma for nylon with suede overlays in vibrant blue. A contrasting yellow formstrip & midsole complete the 'Bluebird' inspired look with t-toe detailing to the front & a classic gum sole underfoot. Finished off with 'PUMA Roma' branding in gold foiling to the lateral sides, the Roma is a piece of PUMA footwear heritage every serious dresser should have in their trainer rotation.
