It was Steven Smith who took over the 99x series head design role in 1988 and introduced the 996. Smith then took the 99x series to the next level with the introduction of the New Balance 997 trainer in 1991. Featuring dual density ENCAP inserts and the famous C-CAP sole technology, the 997 was one of the most cushioned trainers New Balance had ever released. Typically it was released in grey, giving a nod the 99x series' no fuss design approach. Still regarded as one of the most revolutionary runners of the last 30 years, the 997 is a testament to the trainer technology & innovation that came from the entire 99x series. Featuring a robust Cordura fabric to the uppers which has previously been used used on everything from luggage to military apparel, the 997 ditches the original ENCAP midsole for the latest Ground Contact EVA (GCEVA) midsole technology. With a speckled midsole and gum outsole, other highlights of the foul weather ready 997 includes the iconic N logo embroidered to the lateral sides and 997H branding to the tongue tab.
