New Balance 574 slate grey

The New Balance 574 'Slate Grey' Trainer is the Intelligent Choice

As far as classic colourways are concerned they don't really get much more iconic than the New Balance 574 'Slate Grey' trainer which now arrives at its spiritual home.

If you know you're 550 from your 990v5 then you'll know of the significance of anything grey to New Balance. The Boston born brand even has a full month celebrating the classic colourway in May where classic silhouettes like the 574 & the 2002 are re-released in their original 'urban camouflage' hues. When its competitors were releasing bright coloured running silhouettes, New Balance took a more subtle approach opting for tonal greys & blues, which offered a more practical solution for urban running. NB's 'no fuss' hues were the perfect colourways for urban running, where trainers became dirty from the grime & dirt of the city. Grey trainers blended in with the urban environments of concrete buildings & pavements with NB opting for quality materials & manufacturing such as premium pigskin suede as oppose to garish colourways & inferior materials. If there's one silhouette that has championed 'grey' from day one it's the classic 574 trainer which is now introduced in 'slate grey' to 80s Casual Classics.

It was the 1980s that saw some of the most iconic NB silhouettes of all time. In 1980 NB introduced the 620, closely followed by the 420 in 1982, the 670 in 1984, the 1300 in 1985 and then the New Balance 574 trainer in 1988. American marathon runner and New Balance athlete, Dick Beardsley, famously wore a pair of New Balance running trainers as he crossed the line for the Boston Marathon in 1982. Marketed and designed solely as a 'no fuss' running shoe, the 574 became just as popular for every-day wear. Merging together the best bits from the 575 & the 576, the hybrid design of the 574 also utilised NB's revolutionary ENCAP sole technology which still remains a key feature of New Balance silhouettes today.
