Everything You Need To Know About The adidas Tobacco Gruen Trainer

Originally released in 1972, the adidas Tobacco Gruen trainer is the original 3 stripes leisure shoe from a time when adidas looked to tap into the leisure market.
Sounding something like what Sherlock Holmes would wear on a Sunday afternoon whilst reading the local paper & smoking a pipe, the adidas Tobacco Gruen trainer is the original 3 stripes leisure trainer from the early 1970s. Following in the footsteps of the adidas Gazelle, which was more like its sporty cousin that never stood still, the Tobacco took a more relaxed approach to life, opting for leisure over sports. Maybe the design team at adidas thought they needed something a little less sporty? Or maybe it had something to do with the fact that people were starting to wear trainers for leisure. However, calling a trainer after something that was usually smoked and bad for your health wasn't textbook adidas at all. Originally released in 1972, the adidas Tobacco Gruen trainer was the original 3 stripes leisure shoe and now arrives at 80s Casual Classics. The early 1970s saw adidas tap into the world of leisure shoes with the introduction of archive silhouettes like the the California, the Florida, the Riviera & the Tobacco. Whether or not the tobacco had anything at all to do with smoking is another question all together, but the fact was this was still the early 1970s. World class footballers like Johan Cruyff were still lighting up in the changing rooms at half time and tobacco products were still heavily advertised at all major sporting events. To call a trainer something similar now would be completely unheard of. The Tobacco name probably had more to do with the trainers brown colourway. The fact adidas also released trainers like the Trimm Star in the early 1970s, a trainer which would be linked to the German government's obesity campaign of the mid 1980s, clearly showed adidas cared a lot about your health. Whether or not you smoked in your leisure time was entirely up to you. Above: The adidas Tobacco Gruen trainer in fox orange now available from 80s Casual Classics. With some models originally made in France, Morocco & Slovenia, the Tobacco was a shoe strictly for leisure purposes. Featuring soft suede uppers in the Tobacco's unique brown colourway and signature gum sole, the Tobacco has long been held in high regard by adidas afiocondas & 3 stripes collectors. Re-released back in 2016 the Tobacco's revival was nothing short lived. The Tobacco is now introduced to 80s Casual Classics in an updated 'fox orange' colourway. Featuring soft suede uppers with contrasting 3 stripes in a slightly darker shade to the sidewalls, original trefoil branding to the tongue tab & archive inspired tooling, this latest revival release is sure to get the 3 stripes fans talking.
