Born On The Track: The adidas Firebird Tracksuit Is Back
The adidas Firebird may have been born in the 80s but it was the 90s where it really left its 3 stripes mark on the world of sportswear.
The adidas tracksuit connection really started to gain a global appreciation when the 3 stripes brand teamed up with the German football legend, Franz Beckenbauer, back in the 1970s. The rise of sportswear, the Casuals, the B-Boys and of course a growing demand for the all important 3 stripes running down your sleeves and legs created a new hype for German sportswear like never before. adidas tracksuits have also played a phenomenal part in subcultures over the last 50 years from 80s breakers to 90s Britpoppers to the early noughties rap/rock scene. Its just become one of them iconic styles worn by everyone from Katie Price to Snoop Dog with styles like the adidas Firebird just about as classic as you can physically get. Whether you grew up in the 90s sportswear craze or the early 80s casual era, it’s hard to imagine a world without the quintessential sportswear style. Its a style that many of us still hold a strong connection with and a true retro style that will always be with us as long as there is the existence of sportswear.

First released in the 1980s the adidas Firebird tracksuit came off the back of OG styles like the adidas Beckenbauer as well as the growing dominance of the 3 stripes brand in athletics from marathon running to track and field. Designed for track athletes, the Firebird had a slightly smaller collar than the Beckenbauer with some of the OG models featuring an oversized trefoil logo on the back. An original 80s retro style, the Firebird really made a name for itself in the 90s. Think Sporty Spice from the Spice Girls and Robbie Williams as he turned rock’n’roll and his mass media feud with Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher. When exploring the ongoing feud between Gallagher and Williams The Guardian wrote; “Williams also had a rebellious side with a penchant for adidas jackets, booze, birds and fags”, a sentence which couldn’t really describe the mid 90s era better if it tried, especially after the two were pictured together at Glastonbury in 1995. With the emergence of 90s Britpop and ‘Cool Britannia‘ retro sportswear from the 80s had made a massive comeback with styles like the Firebird coming available in all sorts of crazy colourways from lime green to bright orange. If there was one particular adidas tracksuit style that really made its mark on the 90s it was without a doubt the Firebird.

Now back in OG form, the adidas Firebird tracksuit is revived from the 3 stripes archives. The 90s sportswear icon features a lightweight tricot fabric for that signature shiny tracksuit aesthetic. Track top highlights include the all important 3 stripes running down each sleeve, original trefoil branding to the chest, zip pockets, classic stand up collar and ribbed cuffs. The track pants feature the signature 3 stripes running down each leg with the trefoil logo to the left left and a classic style fit. Wear them separate or team them up together to be a true retro tracksuit don. Both styles are also available in an assortment of colourways including scarlet red as well as classic navy and black.
