The PUMA Madrid Trainer is An OG Handball Trainer From The 1970s

The PUMA Madrid trainer returns from the Herzogenaurach archives for 2023 in an updated 'bluebird' inspired colourway.

If you know a thing or two about about "Casual" trainers from the 1970s & 1980s, you will know just how significant trainers with cities in their names are. From Malmo to Manchester it's usually the City Series from adidas that steals the show when it comes to cities. It wasn't just Adi Dassler though that had a fondness for places, so did his brother Rudolph, and PUMA also had their fair share of city inspiration in their shoes. Classic PUMA trainers like the Madrid, the Oslo, the Palermo, the M'nster & the Roma all came from that magical era of the Dassler brother's bitter rivalry of one-upmanship. Now revived from the archives in an updated 'bluebird' inspired colourway, the PUMA Madrid trainer returns in all its OG glory. Taking its original navy & white colourway inspiration from Madrid's coat of arms, the PUMA Madrid trainer was originally made in the super efficient industrial factories of West Germany in the 1970s which were a far stretch from the sun drenched streets of the Spanish capital city. The Madrid trainer saw PUMA adopt another city name in a silhouette, just like the Roma had done in 1968, and although it wasn't really part of an ongoing City collection like adidas, it still went down a treat in the trainer world. Originally made in West Germany in the 1970s, the Madrid was actually built for the speedy Handball courts, a sport which was massive in Germany at the time and also Spain which might add some explanation to the name. The Madrid was similar in appearance to other Handball shoes from the Herzogenaurach archives such as the Handball Spurt & the Stenzel Coach.
