The signature Barbour tartan, in its various forms, is something like the equivalent of Nova Check to Burberry or House Check to Aquascutum. Oozing Britishness thanks to the Royal connection (God Save The Queen), Barbour’s signature Scottish pattern has become a key feature of the inside of Barbour jackets all over the country. From the Prince of Wales doing the rounds at Windsor Castle in a pair of wellies to waterproof matchday attire, Barbour’s appeal runs across the board. Barbour’s origins go way back to 1894 and South Shields in the North East of England. Originally founded by John Barbour, it was actually John’s grandson who developed the brand’s signature waxed cotton fabric for motorcycle uniforms. The durable waxed cotton fabric was robust and water repellent making it ideal for speedy road use. Barbour motorcycle jackets from the 1950s also had a tartan lining which added extra warmth for its wearer. The colourful Scottish cloth provided excellent insulation for winter road use, as well as extra padding for the garment. Over the years Barbour have continued the concept of tartan, however nowadays its more tartan prints as oppose to the traditional cloth itself.
