Everything You Need To Know About The adidas ZX 700 Trainer

The adidas ZX 700 trainer was released in a golden era of retro runners & captured all the running tech innovation of the 1980s.

From the running track to the office commute, the 1980s was about all about technology & innovation. The colourful decade gave us a new era of tech from portable devices like the Walkman, the mobile phone & the Gameboy to the very first Mac computer and the introduction of CD’s. Tech may have come a long way since the 1980s but it was like someone had already planned the era to be the most influential. The 80s wasn’t just about Super Mario & massive mobile phones though. It was all about running shoes & who could create the most innovative performance technology. For example; Nike gave us the Air Max. Asics gave us the Gel-Lyte & adidas gave us the ZX Line. The “trainer race” was in full swing and the ZX line from adidas captured the 80s tech innovation boom perfectly in trainer form. One of them very special ZX line styles was the adidas ZX 700 trainer, which now arrives at 80s Casual Classics in all its OG glory.

Before the ZX line, adidas had already stamped their 3 stripes on the running world. The ZX line continued the legacy of the adidas Oregon from 1982, the adidas New York from 1983 & the Boston Super from 1984, only this time the sole technology was souped up to the max. First introduced in 1984 the ZX line utilised ground-breaking sole technology such as Torsion & Soft Cell with each shoe specifically designed for a different running terrain. That was the beauty about the ZX line. One shoe could be for road running, the next one could be slightly tweaked for off road use. As far as retro runners from the 80s goes, the ZX line is just about as good as it gets.

Coming shortly after the ZX 500 which was released in 1984 and the ZX 600 which was also released in 1985, the adidas ZX 700 was one of the very first designs to roll off the ZX production line. It featured things like aerated metallic polyester mesh to the toe box, polybag foam to the rear of the shoe for added lightness & extra ventilation, reflective detailing for added visibility at night & suede overlays for added toughness. Geared more towards the needs of long distance runners, the ZX 700 also featured an EVA midsole and extra grip to the outsole for better traction.
