Everything You Need To Know About The adidas ZX 500 Trainer

Now revived in all its OG 80s running glory, the adidas ZX 500 returns for the latest season in an updated ‘Victory Crimson’ colourway.

The ZX series from adidas has seen a massive resurgence in recent years. From OG re-releases of classic late 80s styles like the ZX 8000 in its iconic ‘Aqua’ colourway to collaborations with the Danish toy brand, Lego. There’s just something very special about the ZX line with its seamless running heritage of trainer designs from the golden era of archival 3 stripes. Following on from the huge success of the adidas Oregon trainer from 1982 which utilised Bill Dellinger’s ground-breaking Dellinger web system, adidas decided to up the anti with the introduction of the ZX line in 1984. One of the very first trainers to roll of ZX manufacturing line was the adidas ZX 500, a classic 80s runner which now returns in all its OG glory for 2021.

The year was 1984. Casual fashion was in full swing. Frankie Goes To Hollywood dominated the charts. Arnold Schwarzenegger said “I’ll be back” for the very first time and technology was absolutely booming. As far as pop culture and tech were concerned 1984 was a very good year. It was also a very good year for trainers. First introduced in 1984, the ZX line utilised ground-breaking sole technology such as Torsion & Soft Cell with each shoe specifically designed for a different running terrain. That was the beauty about the ZX line. One shoe could be for road running, the next one could be slightly tweaked for off road use.

As the ZX line grew, so did the technology with little tweaks and adaptations along the way to create some of the greatest running shoes the world has probably ever seen. The ZX 500 was one of the very first ZX line trainers. It featured nylon mesh and suede uppers, ghilly lacing as well as a dual density EVA midsole and heel counter for super stability. Originally designed for long distance running the ZX 500 didn’t just perform, it was also a great looking shoe.
