The adidas ZX 500 Gets A Lush ‘Linen Green’ Overhaul

The highly celebrated & original ZX line trainer, the adidas ZX 500, now arrives at 80s Casual Classics in an updated ‘Linen Green’ colourway.

From the Sunday morning joggers to the serious marathon runners, the ZX Series from “die marke mit den 3 streifen” changed the world of running trainers like nothing before it. Before the all too often “gimmicky” sneaker scene of the modern day, the raffles & the resellers, the 1980s footwear landscape looked a hell of a lot different as far as trainer releases were concerned. Hype culture still existed to an extent, as we previously explored with were the Casuals were the original hypebeasts, however how the product performed & its own unique trainer tech carried a lot more weight back then than just its resale value alone. The ZX Series gave birth to some of the most innovative trainer tech of the entire 1980s. Kicking off with the all important adidas ZX 500 trainer in 1984 which now arrives at 80s Casual Classics in a lush ‘Linen Green’ colourway.

Whether it was the original ZX 500 from 1984, the ZX 600 from 1985, the ZX 280 from 1986, the ZX 530L from 1987, the ZX 310 from 1988 or the ZX 9000 from 1989, each silhouette from the ZX line was tweaked with the latest trainer tech for optimal performance. Each style had its own unique colourway as well as the latest innovation from torsion technology to stabilizing heel counters. As a decade, the 1980s saw technology reach new levels with the introduction of the first PC’s, Compact Disc Players, stealth planes & the original Game Boy from Nintendo. From a footwear design perspective the ZX Series was a testament to the massive impact that the 1980s had on technology whether it was running trainers or space shuttles.

The concept of the ZX Series was pretty simple, create a series of running trainers that could be used to meet the needs’ of different running terrains for all levels of runners. That was the whole magic about the ZX Series, one shoe could be tweaked for road running, the next one could be slightly tweaked for off road use. The same shoe could be used by a casual Sunday morning jogger as well as an elite marathon athlete. In the case of the ZX 500, which was the very first silhouette to roll off the ZX Series design floor, it was all about high mileage & performance. Featuring the state of the art Ghilly lacing system, dual density EVA, an extended heel counter with heel motion control, the ZX 500 really set the bar for the rest of the ZX line which would continue to break the boundaries of running trainer tech throughout the 1980s.
