The adidas SPEZIAL Trainer Gets A Bright Blue & Vivid Red Update

The celebrated casual silhouette, the adidas SPEZIAL trainer, gets a striking colourway update in bright blue & vivid red for the latest season.

Things started to change in 1979. Punk had progressed into New Wave. Synthesisers & drum machines were replacing traditional instruments & disco flares were yesterdays news. Blondie gave us ‘Heart of Glass’ & the first Sony Walkman went on sale. There was a sense of something new on the horizon and that anything was possible. The new era also marked a seismic shift in sportswear. The birth of the Casual, and a new admiration for all things 3 stripes. 1979 also marked the year that adidas first introduced the Handball Spezial trainer, or just Spezial as it also known. What the German sportswear brand didn’t really know at the time is just how big the adidas Spezial would become away from the handball courts. The Casual connection was far greater than any influence a top Handball-Bundesliga could have on the shoe. If there were only a handful of classic adidas trainers that were at the heart of the Casual scene, the Spezial would be on that very special list.

The adidas Spezial trainer was a performance shoe specifically designed for indoor court use for playing popular German sports such as handball. The design allowed for quick game play on the court with a traction sole for sudden changes of direction. Like the majority of adidas styles that were released in the golden era of casual trainers, it was all about rarity, and the Spezial was just about as rare as they came. Away fans from British football clubs competing across Europe during the era would bring back sacred styles like the Spezial. It was an instant hit with the Casuals.

Every young working class Casual from Aberdeen to Arsenal wanted the gold Spezial stamp on their shoes, it was as simple as that. Usually worn with a pair of jeans and the latest wares from the likes of Lacoste, Sergio Tacchini or Fila, it just looked the business. After much anticipation from adidas fans & collectors across the world, the timeless three stipes silhouette returned in 2015 after Gary Aspden introduced his own adidas line of the same name.
