The adidas München Returns To Its Spiritual Home

This latest adidas München trainer release draws inspiration from the original ‘Made in Japan’ version which was first introduced in the early 1980s.

When it comes to classic adidas trainers it’s all about the cities & the celebrated City series from the German 3 stripes brand. As far as classic adi goes from the 70s & 80s, it really doesn’t get much better. From Malmo to Milano to München, the City Series explored some of the top European cities, their colours and their associated football teams. First introduced in the 1970s, the City Series originally featured 24 shoes which represented a different city across Europe. Some 40 years later & the original City series still holds a place in every adidas fans’ heart. The adidas München trainer is one of them very special 3 stripes styles from the golden era of terrace trainers from the 1980s.

First introduced in 1976, the adidas München trainer took its name from the Bavarian capital, home to the beer & bratwurst festivities of Oktoberfest and the highly successful European football heavyweights, Bayern Munich. The timing of the City Series couldn’t of come at a better time for the young Casuals who were stampeding their way across the continent in search of European football glory in the late 1970s. If it wasn’t for these young football fans it would be hard to imagine the world of adidas as we know it today.

Like the majority of adidas trainers at the time, the München was originally built for performance, traction & speed. Designed as an indoor training shoe, the style quickly gained the respect of the Casuals who adopted the classic 3 stripes style. As far as desirable trainers went for the 80s Casuals, the super suede München silhouette was at the very top of the list. Having the 3 stripes on your shoes was like a badge of honour. The rarer and more expensive the trainer the more desirable it became, it was as simple as that.

This latest version to arrive at 80s Casual Classics was originally revived by Gary Aspden and his SPEZIAL line back in 2015. As the die hard adidas fans out there will know, the original 1976 München trainer actually featured a white chunky sole unit which was similar to the likes of the Trimm Trab. The ‘Made in Japan’ version featured a gum sole unit instead, it was this OG Japanese version that gave inspiration to Aspden’s revival design.
